Prepare the area that you are going to set your tiles. Start by removing all the wax, grease or oil with a good environmentally safe chemical or cleaner. It’s because adhesives will not adhere where oil or grease is still present in the base. Make sure that the base is flat, plane down high spots and re-nail any loose boards on wood floors.
The first run of floor tile should be started from the exact center of the floor, so use these steps to locate the center of the room. Locate the exact center on each wall and mark that center spot. In rooms with irregular measurements, just ignore the irregularities. Then hold a chalk line at the center position on facing walls, as marked and snap it on the floor. The exact center will be marked at the point where the two lines cross.
Now lay out your tiles on the floor. The individual tiles are attached on the underside with rubber “dots.” The dots serve two purposes: they hold the tiles together in the patterned sheets and also act as spacers to create even grout lines. The rubber dots are easy to cut through.
Spread the adhesive smoothly and evenly with a square-notched trowel. The adhesive should be as thick as your tile. Set the first sheet of tiles into place and press it firmly into the adhesive. For the second sheet, remember to line up the pattern and check the spacing and then set it into place. Work from the center until all parts of the room are covered.
